Until 1945, more than 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned here. From 1945-1950, the Soviet Special Camp No. 7/No. 1 was located on the site. In 1961, the GDR founded the Sachsenhausen National Memorial. The present Memorial and the Sachsenhausen Museum have been part of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation since 1993.
